Today has been a day for gettin' shit done.
Number one was getting my hair cut. This was a risky prospect seeing as I speak next to no Spanish. Fortunately, the hairdresser had a picture on the wall which was roughly what I wanted so I was able to point and gesture.
I'm pretty happy with the result, though she did "Latino" it up a bit more than I would have preferred (i.e. loads of hair gel and spiked straight up). It'll be cool when I've showered though.
Anyway, it was a lot more successful than my sister's hilarious story about getting a 20p haircut in Ecuador. (Pictures Liz?).
I was also able to get a good guidebook for Central America as well as post a parcel of some of the gifts I've bought (look out for it Mum!).
Today was also quite sad as Rachel, my last travelling companion, and I parted company. She's heading back to the States to get back to a real life, find a job etc. So, I'm flying solo now. I'm not worried though. Met loads of people who travel "alone", and almost always they're in groups of people met on the way.
Also, I think the biggest lesson of this whole adventure is that if dumb 18 year girls can do it, then I've got no fucking excuses!
So, my current plans are to head out tomorrow morning for La Fortuna - a pretty popular destination near an awesome volcano. From there I'm going to trek onwards North to Nicaragua. I will keep heading North until I get bored, at which point I'll head up to the States (probably via Florida).
So, stick with it.
Oh by the way, I feel I haven't been "punching up" the blog with jokes recently. So here is a random anecdote:
On the drive back to San Jose, a police officer pulled us over and I panicked said "Habla Espanol, senor?" ("Do you speak Spanish, Sir?") instead of either "I don't speak Spanish" or "Do you speak English?". He gave me a funny look, unsurprisingly. Imagine someone walking into your place of work and saying loudly in a strange accent: "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH SIR?". Awesome.
